“Educación Sin Barreras”: a journey of learning and hope in Santo Tomás, Amatenango del Valle.

At Asociación de Apoyo y Educación en Chiapas A.C. (AECH A.C.), we firmly believe that education is a fundamental right and a powerful tool for transforming lives and helping dreams become reality. Guided by this conviction, and as part of the ongoing visits we make to different communities throughout Chiapas, on October 6, 2025, we had the opportunity to visit the community of Santo Tomás, near Amatenango del Valle, and hear firsthand about the challenges families face in ensuring their children have access to basic education.

During these visits, parents shared with us the difficult journey involved in taking their children to school. Factors such as long distances, the lack of financial resources for daily transportation, and the absence of nearby educational centers force many families to make difficult decisions: prioritizing the education of only some family members, keeping children out of school, or reducing school attendance days, resulting in prolonged absences that seriously affect their educational development. In many cases, children are able to attend school only inconsistently.

Although some children choose to join the AECH A.C. boarding program in San Cristóbal de las Casas, many families expressed their desire for their children to study without having to leave their homes and communities behind. Faced with the growing number of children eager to learn but without real access to transportation, our team understood that we could not remain indifferent.

That was when a new idea began to take shape: if students could not reach the school, then the school should reach them. This vision gave birth to the “Education Without Barriers” project, an initiative built step by step alongside the community, with the active participation of parents committed to their children’s future and the shared desire to provide them with the tools they need to grow, succeed, and pursue their dreams.

“Education Without Barriers” represents far more than an educational project; it is a compassionate response to inequality and a collective effort to break down the obstacles that prevent children from accessing one of their most important rights: education.

We invite you to join us on this journey, where children and young people are beginning to overcome the barriers that once prevented them from starting and continuing their basic education, and where parents work tirelessly every day to provide their children with the opportunities they themselves never had.
